A Trip to the water is good for us. Health benefits of the beach reduces stress levels and makes us happier and more creative.
A day at the beach makes us feel relaxed. We soak up the sun and play in the water, read a good book and hang out with our favourite family and friends. You feel peaceful and this makes it a great source of stress relief.
Being at the beach has health benefits for your brain and body. This is why it is the best place to take a few days off or to live permanently.
GOOD FOR YOUR BODY
You can run a mile on a clear stretch of sand with a gentle salt breeze in your face, the sound of crashing waves and the sound of seagulls. Being at the beach means you are being outside and being active. You can have a beach run, a gentle stroll on the boardwalk, swim in the ocean or morning yoga on the sun.
Even a simple walk on the beach is a better workout. Walking on sand requires more effort than walking on a hard surface.
A beach visit means spending more time in the sun. This means more Vitamin D and this is good for your bones. It is also good for lowering blood pressure, supporting your immune system and helping with arthritis.
Too much sun can give you skin cancer. Stay out of the direct sunlight between the hours of 11am and 3pm and wear sunscreen and a hat.
Saltwater and sand is good for your skin also. Ocean water is full of minerals and sand has exfoliating qualities. Make sure to spend time walking barefoot on the beach and in the water.
GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN
A day at the beach benefits your mental well being. Living within sight of the ocean can lower stress levels. ‘ Seeing blue space’ (lakes, oceans, rivers) has a greater positive effect on people than ‘green space’ (parks, trees, lawns).
That effect holds even if someone isn’t there in person. Researchers found that dental patients who participated in a virtual reality experience during a dental procedure reporrted lower levels of stress and pain.
Many people feel better when they are exposed to sunlight. Sunlight increases levels of the chemical serotonin, which makes you feel good. A day in the sun at the beach can improve your mental health and make you feel happier.
GOOD FOR YOUR WELL-BEING
A beach trip is associated with unwinding and vacation. When we unplug from electronic devices and spend time with family and friends, this is nothing but good for us. That down time can spark creativity and innovation by recharging our brain. Social engagement is also good for us. Spending time with people we care about makes us feel better overall.
Most of us sleep better at the beach with the sound of the ocean lulling you to sleep or at least the thought of not having to go into the office the next day.
Next time you need a break to recharge your body and brain, head to the beach. Science backs what we’ve all along know. A little time in the sun, sand and water, is good for all of us 🙂
